Awakened from the depths of a chamber in the underworld, the Medusa of Naples accompanies Yelena Yemchuk on a stroll to explore the surface of this upside-down city inhabited by mortals, in a time that is either the future or the distant past, depending on one’s perspective.
Yemchuk’s Neapolitan portraits are infused with the mystery of the gaze, stirred by the thrill of seeing and being seen, amid a jumble of images and reflections alive with the presence of the disquieting yet seductive snake goddess.
In her photographs, Yelena Yemchuk stages the intrusion of another world into everyday life and uses the emotional journey of eye contact to interrogate the uniqueness of the face.
